SYRIA (Reuters) - Islamic State militants advanced on a southern stronghold of the Syrian army on Tuesday after the government launched an offensive to recapture the town of al-Qalamoun that has been under their control, said opposition activists.
The Islamic State stronghold of al-Mansoura, about 250 km (155 miles) north of Homs, has been under siege by government forces under Russian influence since mid-November.
A rebel group calling itself "Free Syrian Army of Qalamoun" (Jaish al-Islam) posted pictures of tanks approaching, with one said to be in the al-Mansoura area.

troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad launched an assault to take al-Mansoura and its nearby suburbs on Tuesday, said the rebel group, known as the Southern Front, based in a British-based base in western Syria.
Some rebel-held areas of northern Syria have seen fighting this year, with many towns and villages captured by either government forces or rebel groups in one phase before the fall of the city.
But al-Mansoura is widely considered a major Islamic State holding, where the jihadists, who have been battling the Syrian army, have managed to operate and command large bases.
